FAQ

Q: What is the difference between coaching and counseling?

“Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going after this life, if anywhere?”

Questions we have all heard so many times. These questions seek to find answers to identity, origin, purpose, and destiny. There are so many more questions that seem to go unanswered, even mysterious: “Why do I not have more success in relationships? Why do I seem to be in a place of stagnation in my career? Why do I not have more motivation for self-care (ie, exercise, proper diet, healthy friends)? And, speaking more from a spiritual perspective, “why does God seem so far away, or not even real at all? Why doesn’t the Bible make sense to me? Why don’t I want to read the Bible more? Why is it so hard to pray? Why pray? How do I pray? Does God even hear me or know me?”

These and so many more questions consume so much of our thought life and have a great deal of impact on our everyday lives. The obstacles, challenges, and hindrances of life seem overwhelming at times, preventing us from flourishing and thriving.

My prayer, hope, desire, and passion is to come alongside you as a life coach, helping you recognize the God-given potential within you so that you can become the person God designed and destined for your life.

Life coaching is not about digging up your past (what I call “emotional archaeology”), so you can be “fixed.” You are not a project, you are a child of God, made in His image. As a life coach, my objective is to partner with you and start where you are now and build upon that (what I call “visionary architecture”). Using a variety of tools (ie, personality and strengths, giftings, exercises, and matrices), an awareness of where you are and your potential becomes more evident. The primary tool I use is the Bible, the word of God, the “Sword of the Spirit.” This concept comes from Ephesians 6:10-18, specifically verse 17, where the apostle Paul describes the Spiritual Armor of God, using the analogy of the battle apparatus a Roman soldier would wear in war.

I believe the answers to the questions of life can be found as we seek God, listen to the holy spirit, and study the word of God, the “Sword of the Spirit.”

As we come together in a session, I will seek the Lord and offer questions to you so that your heart and mind are stirred and ignited to recognize that you have the solutions inside of yourself, placed there by God. I want to facilitate your awareness and encourage you to find the motivation and action plans to move forward and accomplish your goals. My purpose is not only to provide you with information, but rather bring revelation and inspiration so that life transformation occurs (Romans 12:1-2).

Q: What is my approach to biblical hermeneutics (interpretation)?

My approach to biblical study and interpretation (hermeneutics) is to read the Bible from a literal, grammatical, historical, contextual perspective. It may be described as reading a passage in context, who is the author, and intended audience, and what were the historical events at the time of writing. All the while, applying that appropriately to our present situation. Some may describe it this way:

1) Observation (What does it say?)

2) Interpretation (What does it mean?)

3) Application (What does it mean to me, and how can I apply it?)

I look forward to partnering with you and coming alongside you so that you find peace, joy, and success in all areas of your life.

Q: What about mental illness, such as depression, anxiety, and trauma/crisis-related disorders?

These conditions are outside the scope of coaching abilities and training, and should be dealt with by a licensed professional counselor or psychologist. Life coaches are not trained to diagnose and treat mental illnesses, however, coaching can provide insight and various tools to bring a sense of stability and grounding so that those suffering from those disorders may function in a healthy manner as they progress on their journey to healing while seeking and engaging with professional help.

Q: What about health insurance?

Coaching is not covered by health insurance, therefore, I do not take payments from your insurance company. What I do offer is confidential coaching and partnering with you so that no reporting to insurance companies is necessary, relieving you of certain insurance requirements. I also do not take HSA or FSA cards, however, you may receive a receipt so that you can submit that to possibly receive a refund of charges from those respective insurance entities.

Q: How does Christian life coaching differ from basic life coaching?

You do not necessarily need to have Christian beliefs to benefit from our relationship and time together, however, studies have proven that coaching is much more effective with quicker and more permanent results when a biblical, spiritual perspective is embraced. With your permission, I will integrate prayer, scripture, and biblical principles along with neuro and psychological techniques and tools to help you find solutions and live a flourishing life.

I have a Christian world view, and acknowledge that the Bible is the ultimate source for understanding the human experience, and that a relationship with Jesus Christ is our greatest hope.

My hope and desire is that more is done than only an alleviation of symptoms, but rather to help you bring about a life -changing transformation for a more fulfilling and flourishing life as you align your life with biblical principles and find purpose in Jesus Christ.
